Raindrops on Roses- Available Now!
Date: 15th November 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery, Bakewell

Earlier this month, we announced the winner of The Great British Home Brew Challenge 2016, a competition run in partnership with Brew UK & Waitrose. From over 100 beers entered, the winner was Phil Sisson with his Belgian Wit brewed with rose petals. We are very pleased to announce that this beer is available now!

Phil, who recently moved from London to Scotland with his wife and daughter noted on winning, "This is a huge, and completely unexpected honour for me! I am absolutely flabbergasted. I have been a big admirer of Thornbridge beer for years and it is just fantastic to have been able to impress the judges with my own creation. I originally brewed the beer as a present for my wifes birthday and my daughter chose the musical-themed name, so it is a truly family affair. I am really looking forward to seeing it on the shelves at Waitrose."

Thornbridge Head Brewer, Rob Lovatt noted that, “The beer Phil brewed was undoubtedly well made with the roses working in a beautiful harmony with the camomile and coriander. A worthy winner from a great selection of beers that were submitted to the challenge which goes from strength to strength. I enjoyed tasting Raindrops on Roses and working with Phil to recreate this and I am sure it will be very popular”.

We are extremely pleased to add another TWO brand new beers to the Thornbridge bottle range!

Huck- Double IPA 7.4%

Huck is absolutely bursting with flavourful Simcoe, Amarillo and Mosaic hops. Aromas of grapefruit, mango, lychee and tropical fruit explode from the beer before coming through powerfully in the taste, it finishes with a hugely moreish bitterness.

Valravn- Imperial Black IPA 8.8%

Based on Thornbridge classic, Wild Raven, this beer really packs a punch with higher concentrations of new world hops combined with dark malts that result in a fantastically eclectic and complex flavour. Tropical fruit flavours combine expertly with hints of dark chocolate and coffee. A dangerously drinkable beer!

Raindrops on Roses – The Winner of the Great British Home Brew Challenge 2016

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2016 Great British Home Brew Challenge, supported by Brew UK, Waitrose and Thornbridge Brewery, is Phil Sisson with Raindrops on Roses (5.3%) – a Belgian Wit style beer, brewed with rose petals.

Phil, who recently moved from London to Scotland with his wife and daughter, says, "This is a huge, and completely unexpected honour for me!

Phils beer was chosen as the winner, from over 100 that had been submitted, by an expert panel of judges including Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer at Thornbridge, Greg Hughes, Director at BrewUK and Sarah Hammond, Waitrose Beer Buyer.

Rob Lovatt, says, “The beer Phil brewed was undoubtedly well made with the roses working in a beautiful harmony with the camomile and coriander. A worthy winner from a great selection of beers that were submitted to the challenge which goes from strength to strength. I enjoyed tasting Raindrops on Roses and working with Phil to recreate this and I am sure it will be very popular”.

Sarah Hammond, Waitrose Beer Buyer, says, ‘“We loved the fact that we could distinguish the traditional style of beer that it is based on, and that it came with a really modern and well-judged twist. The palate was refreshing and full of flavour, and all the elements were really well-balanced - distinct yet not overpowering. A great combination of delicacy, interest and full of flavour, this is an excellent homebrew that we hope our customers will enjoy as much as we did.”

Raindrops on Roses, (330ml) will be available in 70 Waitrose branches from the 14th of November.

The Heart Desires

The Heart Desires
Date: 20th October 2016
Location: Thornbridge Barrel Room

The latest addition to The Barrel Room Series, The Heart Desires!

The Heart Desires is part of a project we have been working on at the brewery for a few years now. We wanted to create a modern sour aged in barrels, with the same complexity and depth of flavour which our favourite sours from the USA offer.

This beer started life as a simple blonde ale with low bitterness and was fermented with our house yeast. We then aged this in Burgundy barrels with gooseberries for well over a year. Adding cultures of Brettanomyces, Pediococcus and Lactobacillus at set points let us sour the beer gradually over many months and give layers of flavour that can only be developed over time.

The fruit aroma and flavours complement the sharp sourness which subsides for more malt and yeast character to come through. The resulting beer is a clean, zingy and intense blend of fruit tartness with intimations of crisp Sauvignon Blanc grapes.

The Heart Desires is available now from our Online Shop. This is in very limited supply so grab some before its gone!

Brand New KHS Bottling Line

Bottling line
Brand New KHS Bottling Line
Date: 28th September 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

Here at Thornbridge we are driven by our desire to provide a product of the finest quality and we know that this doesn’t just stop once our beer has left the brewery. We bottle everything on site here in Bakewell and this allows us to personally guarantee the quality of the finished product. With this in mind, we have recently invested in a brand new £1m KHS bottling line. Our current one has done a sterling job in getting us this far, but it’s time to move forward.

As Head Brewer, Rob Lovatt, explains ‘It is the Rolls-Royce of bottling lines; its technology will enable us to achieve extremely low levels of dissolved oxygen in the bottle, it will future proof the growth of the brewery and will prove to be an extremely robust piece of kit with greatly reduced downtime. The bottom line is that we are putting our beer first’.

As part of this progression we have also looked at the design of our bottles and, whilst we have enjoyed working with our distinctive 500ml offerings, we are not afraid of change and after talking with many different people who enjoy our beers, it’s become clear that moving to 330ml will provide a more practically convenient option and allow the opportunity to try more of the beers within our range. We will make this move to the different bottle and though they will be smaller, they will be providing our beer brewery fresh for even longer!

Overall this has been a very exciting time for us here at Thornbridge Brewery and we’re looking forward to this next step in our evolution.

An Exciting Arrival at Thornbridge..
Date: 22nd August 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

The day has finally come, our new bottling line arrived piece by piece at Thornbridge Riverside Brewery this morning!

The packaging line from German company KHS will see the brewery gain significant advantages when it comes to bottling. The new filler will provide greater levels of efficiency with faster output and reduced down time.

Additionally, with what Head Brewer, Rob Lovatt, describes as "the Rolls Royce of bottling lines" we can produce even higher quality beer as Rob notes, it "will enable us to achieve extremely low levels of dissolved oxygen in the bottle". An attribute that will result in even fresher tasting beer.

Check out The Brewers Blog as Rob discusses the new bottling line and why he believes this method is the best path for Thornbridge Brewery versus canning.

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming the guys from Magic Rock Brewing to Thornbridge for a collaboration brew!

Richard & Stuart made the short trip from Huddersfield to our Bakewell brewery to brew our take on a classic Germanic style.

The beer being brewed is an Altbier, this is a style of beer which originates in Dusseldorf, they are typically cool-fermented and lagered, copper-coloured ales. This is style of beer has a rich history with it being brewed in the Rhineland capital since the early 1800s.

We are very excited that this beer will be launched at Peakender 2016, our Festival of Beer in July. Come along and be one of the first to try it!

Serpent, Creating New Beer Boundaries. A Thornbridge, Brooklyn Brewery Collaboration
Date: 1st June 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

Our Barrel-aged collaboration with The Brooklyn Brewery is available now!

Serpent is the first beer of its kind, and one of the coolest things either brewery has ever done.

We went to Oliver’s Cider in Hereford seeking their lees, the natural wild yeasts that ferment their apples into great traditional ciders. We brewed a robust Belgian-inspired golden ale at Thornbridge, added the lees in barrels, aged the beer for more than a year, and bottle conditioned it.

Now Serpent emerges dry, tart, firm, fine and funky, a full expression of our friendship, great British brewing, American boldness, and Herefordshire countryside.

New investment at our Riverside Brewery

Riverside
New investment at our Riverside Brewery
Date: 5th April 2016
Location: Thornbridge Riverside Brewery

We are delighted, as we move into our second decade of brewing, to announce a new £2m investment plan for our Riverside brewery. The funding will provide us with a new bottling line, increased brewing capacity and improved warehousing and logistics facilities.

We have seen considerable growth in our UK and International sales in recent years and we are targeting an 80% increase in turnover over in the next three years. But it’s not all about equipment though as, in preparation for a 70% expansion to our brewing capacity, we have employed an additional 11 staff to take our overall employee numbers to 46.

After an extensive search for a bottling line supplier by our Head Brewer Rob Lovatt, we have selected German company KHS GmbH. The quality of our beer is, of course, paramount to us and with almost 50% of our beer sales being in bottles it is critical that we have the best, most technically up to date bottling line to ensure a quality beer time after time. KHS is a market leader in filling and packaging lines, with over 140 years of experience, so we are in good hands. Our brewing team is always looking for continuous improvement in all of our processes and the new equipment will enable us to achieve extremely low levels of dissolved oxygen in the beer and so retain greater taste and freshness.

Phase 1 of the brewery expansion, including the new bottling line, is expected to be completed by late summer.

Global interest in UK Independent Craft Beer at an all-time high

beerxx
Global interest in UK Independent Craft Beer at an all-time high
Date: 16th March 2016

Thornbridge and The Stags Head, Sheffield are pleased to be hosting visitors from UKTI  for a pub experience pub on March 17th as part of our Sheffield Beer Week celebrations.

British independent craft beer is in high demand on the global market according to UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Yorkshire and the Humber and the Society for Independent Brewers (SIBA).

UKTI, the government department that helps UK companies succeed abroad and supports overseas companies wanting to invest in Britain, has organised fully-booked ‘Meet the Buyer’ events at SIBA’s BeerX conference in Sheffield this week and says British beer from small, independent craft-brewers has never been so popular globally, with a total of 12 countries sending delegates to Britain’s biggest brewing trade show.

BeerX has incorporated the international export activity into the packed roster of events following huge demand from buyers from beer brewing powerhouse countries such Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic, as well as other markets including China, Iceland, Greece, Ukraine. France, Australia, Denmark, Cyprus, Sweden and India.

“British independent craft brewers are seizing the global demand for their flavoursome, unique beers with both hands and exporting in higher numbers than ever before. The sessions being run by UKTi at BeerX are designed to create a platform for SIBA’s members looking to begin exporting, or increase the markets they already sell to, to speak directly with international buyers,” said Mike Benner, SIBA Managing Director.

Stephen Noblett, an international trade advisor and food and drink sector specialist at UKTI Yorkshire and the Humber who organised the fully-booked export sessions at BeerX, said: “This is the largest delegation of overseas buyers that UKTI Yorkshire and the Humber has ever attracted to BeerX.

“The record breaking attendance reflects recent research by UKTI which showed about 75 per cent of food and drink exporters expected overseas sales to increase over the next quarter.”

Stephen said expert advice on the development of specific markets followed by licensing, regulation and documentation were among the areas of most interest for food and drink companies seeking expert guidance from UKTI trade advisors.

With more than 300 breweries in attendance, BeerX promises to be a true showcase of the best beer from the UK’s independent craft brewers and runs from the 16th to the 19th of March at iceSheffield.

More information about the public beer festival, or ‘BeerX - Festival of Beer’, is available at http://beerx.org/festivalofbeer/

A Very Eventful Weekend

A Very Eventful Weekend
Date: 29th February 2016
Location: Bristol, London, Munich

We were very busy at the weekend as we had events in Bristol, London and even Munich!

The trip to Bristol saw Chris, our Thornbridge Hall brewer take over The Navy Volunteer pub as we took 29 different beers to The West Country!

The Bristolians were out in force as they emptied the vast majority of the kegs and casks we brought down.

Back along the M4, Alex & James were in East London for Craft Beer Rising 2016! With nearly 150 breweries in attendance this was the biggest incarnation of the event to date.

A sell out crowd came along to The Old Truman Brewery for the event and the Thornbridge bar was very busy with festival goers.

Our Bourbon Oak Imperial Stout, Eldon was particularly well received amongst the other lovely beers we brought including Halcyon and I Love You Will U Marry Me.

Lastly, we were also in action in Bavaria as we went along to Braukunst Live in Munich over the weekend. With over 100 exhibitors showcasing beers from all around the world it really was a fantastic event that we did with our friends in Germany from Hofmark Brauerie.

CAMRA National Winter Ales Festival 2016
Date: 22nd February 2016
Location: The Roundhouse, Derby

Last weekend we went along to CAMRAs National Winter Ales Festival (NWAF) as it appeared for the final time in Derby before moving to Norwich for 2017.

It was a fantastic event with a wonderful array of beers from around the UK being available.

Saint Petersburg, our Imperial Russian Stout was particularly well received as we received a bronze in the Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2015/16 competition as well as receiving Gold in the CAMRA East Midlands Regional Competition!

Also our 6% Well Hopped Pale Ale, Otters Tears, brewed in memory of the late, well loved beer writer, Simon Johnson was a hit at NWAF as the 36 gallons we brought were quickly consumed.

Thanks to everyone at CAMRA for helping to organise such a great event and to everyone that came along, it was a record breaking event with over 13,800 people in attendance and a staggering 57,000 pints drunk!

I Love You Will U Marry Me

I Love You Will U Marry Me
Date: 11th February 2016

As we are coming up to Valentines Day weekend, a lot of people think it is all about Prosecco & oysters, but we have managed to prove beer can be romantic too.

As has happened a few times with our 4.5% Strawberry Blonde Ale we released last year, I Love You Will U Marry Me has recently played a big part in a wedding proposal!

This time the couple, Karoliina & Niko, massive beer fans from Finland became engaged to each other just before Christmas 2015 when Karoliina decided to propose with our beer.

They first became familiar with the beer as they stopped in a bar for a drink on the way to their friends housewarming in Helsinki and it was on tap there;

"We thought that the name was refreshingly positive and silly, and the beer was actually good too."

Fast forward to late December 2015, they had arranged to meet up for a drink before they both went home to their respective families for Christmas. Niko also had his birthday coming up on the 24th, so this gave Karoliina the chance to give him a very special gift;

"I first started to suspect that this wasn’t going to be a night just like the others when she set up a camera on the table next to us and told me that she was going to tape the whole process of me opening my present. I found it a bit odd but decided to play along anyway, as I thought it was just another one of her eccentric but in the end rather cute desires."

She then went on to give Niko his present, a bottle of I Love You Will U Marry Me with her great grandfathers wedding ring attached to it, which stunned her husband to be;

"I just stared at the words “I love you will u marry me” for a long while. I mean, like really, REALLY awkwardly long. Suddenly I snapped out of it and remembered how to actually be a normal human being again. Of course I will marry you."

See the moment he said yes here.

Congratulations to legendary Sheffield music producer Alan Smyth and his wife Donna on their recent wedding!

Ed Cosens of Reverend And The Makers, who we have collaborated with a number of times, worked with us once again to brew Smyth as a special gift to celebrate their wedding.

Alan over the years has played a huge part in the Sheffield music scene working with bands such as Arctic MonkeysPulp & Reverend And The Makers. Him and his wife Donna are huge beer fans so having a beer brewed especially for their wedding is very fitting.

The beer is a 5% hoppy pale ale is straw coloured with lovely fruity notes.

Look out for it at the Thornbridge Taps!

Rita Payne Charity Gig- Sat 23rd January
Date: 4th January 2016
Location: The Rose & Crown, Stannington

Our good friends, and Greystones favourites, Rita Payne, have been asked to play a charity gig on Saturday 23rd January for the Blaire Webb Fund.

Blaire, 27 and from Sheffield, is very ill and needs specialist medical treatment but she can only get that treatment abroad. Pride prevented ferociously independent Blaire from asking for financial help earlier but her rapidly declining health means there is now only a very limited time for her to get treatment. Friends have started a fundraising campaign, they must raise £50,000 by the end of March for what will probably be her final shot to save her life.

The gig is at the Rose and Crown, known locally as Minnies, in Stannington Village, Sheffield on Saturday 23rd January.

It promises to be a fun filled night with the excellent Rita Payne and is the first public appearance of the bands new set up changing from a 2 piece to a 4 piece. The band specialise in their self-proclaimed acoustic foot stompers that are sure to set The Rose and Crown alight.

Check out their new track at: http://ritapayne.bandcamp.com/track/nobodys-fool

Tickets are £10 from the pub or online from www.wegottickets.com/event/34509 and all the money will go to the fund.

Doors open 8pm.

Sheffield Helipad Appeal

Sheffield Helipad Appeal
Date: 17th December 2015

Our chosen charity for 2016 will be the Sheffield Helipad Appeal, a fantastic local charity.

Their mission is to help save lives by building a new helipad in Sheffield, for people who need urgent life-saving care

Sheffield Hospitals Charity is raising funds to build a new helipad next to the Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) at the Northern General Hospital.

The A&E Department became a Major Trauma Centre (MTC) in April 2013. This means that it has the specialist staff and equipment needed to deliver lifesaving treatment to the most extreme and urgent trauma cases. It serves a population of 1.8 million people covering South Yorkshire and parts of the Humber, Derbyshire and the East Midlands.

The current ‘secondary’ helipad at the Northern General was built more than 20 years ago and is both too small and too far from A&E. Secondary means that patients must be transferred from the helicopter into a land ambulance then driven to the emergency department adding precious minutes and risking additional discomfort and complications. When a patient has major trauma, the faster a patient receives specialist treatment, the higher their chances of surviving or surviving well.

The new helipad will be right outside the ambulance bay and that is just a short trolley push between the helicopter and A&E.  It will be built to the latest safety standards and will be lit so that patients can receive life‐saving treatment within about 90 seconds of landing, 24 hours a day.

The cost of building and equipping this state-of-the-art helipad is approximately £2 million

Cambridge astrophysicist wins the 2015 Great British Homebrew Challenge

Will Alston
Cambridge astrophysicist wins the 2015 Great British Homebrew Challenge
Date: 9th September 2015
Location: Thornbridge Brewery

Britains best home-brewed beer has been announced today. The winning ale was created by Will Alston, 29, who spends his days researching black holes at Cambridge Universitys Institute Of Astronomy. The national competition was launched earlier in the year by ourselves and our friends at Waitrose and home brew kit experts Brew UK. With the craft beer scene flourishing in the UK, our quest was to find the very best beer made by a home brewer.

There were winning entries in seven categories, with Will Alstons Rhubarbe De Saison judged the overall winner by a panel of drink experts. The top home-brew is a saison, which is a pale ale style that originated in rural France. Will gave his brew a more home grown twist by using rhubarb he had growing in his allotment. This winning recipe will now be made at Thornbridge Brewery in Derbyshire and will launch into Waitrose shops next month.

Will says he was amazed to win and it came as a complete surprise as this was the first competition he had entered.

Will explains, “I live in Cambridge with my girlfriend, Marion, who very kindly allows me to take over the kitchen a few times a month. I love food and enjoy growing things in my allotment and home-brewing just seemed a natural extension to this. My approach to brewing is to try and match a style as closely as possible, then add my own twists.  I have a very basic all‐grain set up which means you have to work harder to get good results but also allows you to be more involved with the process. Ive been able to produce some very tasty and interesting beers so far which have gone down very well with friends.  I was particularly pleased with my rhubarb saison so decided to enter it."

When asked if being a scientist helped, he continued, "In some aspects, yes, In terms of the attention to detail during the actual process – temperature controls and that kind of thing. But in terms of creating interesting beers, I guess its more of an art form than a science. But good science is more of an art form, too, because if youre just following prescribed rules, youre not going to find anything new."

Our head brewer and a judge in this years competition, Rob Lovatt says: "Wills beer was a very worthy winner – a refreshing easy-drinking beer with complex flavours that came together well, showing great skill in the brewing process.  Weve never brewed anything like this before so weve been really excited at the brewery to be involved in making this winning recipe."

Says Waitrose Beer Buyer, Kate Prall, "The competition mirrors the increasing interest in beer in the UK. Customers are increasingly becoming more confident and experimental in their beer choices. In recent years, they are now more likely to have six or seven beers in their repertoire rather than just one or two old favourites. This is reflected in our speciality beer sales which are up 34% over the past year.

"In its second year, it is great to see the interest this competition generates among home brewers. The love and care that is given to the beers is tangible and it is a great credit to all those who entered the competition that judging a winner was so very difficult.  You can really taste the rhubarb in Wills ale. It is fruity but without being sweet as the rhubarb gives a slight tartness to the overall taste. We think Wills winning ale will be really popular."

Greg Hughes of online home brewing supplier BrewUK adds: "Many of the worlds most renowned craft breweries have begun with brewing kits used at the kitchen tables, and the number of home brewers is increasing dramatically as interest in beer, in all its styles, reflects the number of new breweries starting up in the UK."

You can buy Will Alston’s Rhubarbe De Saison at selected Waitrose stores, £2.50/500ml, from 12 October

Leading environmental writer and activist Mark Cocker - Evening Guest Lecture ‘Birds & People’ @ Wild Thing? Conference

Wednesday 9th September, Peak Theatre, Sheffield Hallam University

Doors open 6.30pm finish 9pm

Ian Rotherham and colleagues are pleased to announce that the well-known British environmentalist, Mark Cocker is giving the evening guest lecture at the Wild Thing Conference.

Mark Cocker, author, naturalist and environmental activist, writes and broadcasts on nature and wildlife in a variety of national media. His ten books include works of biography, history, literary criticism and memoir. His last two, Claxton: Field Notes from a Small Planet (2014) and Birds and People (with photographer David Tipling), were shortlisted for six literary prizes. His previous book Crow Country was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize (2008) and won the New Angle Prize for Literature (2009). The wonderful Birds Britannica was a collaboration with Richard Mabey. For 35 years he has lived in Norfolk, where he devotes free time to restoring a small wooded fen called Blackwater with its thousands of wild inhabitants. He served on the councils of the Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists’ Society and Society’s President in 2007-8. He has had an advisory capacity to the British Trust for Ornithology from 2005-7 and in 2008, with Tim Birkhead, John Fanshawe and Jeremy Mynott, Mark co-founded New Networks for Nature. This promotes and celebrates the central place that nature plays in British cultural life through annual symposia in, for example, Oxford (2009), Thetford (2010) and Stamford (2011-2). These involve an enormous range of creative professionals whose work draws on nature and landscape.

Birds and People by Mark Cocker and David Tipling, published to worldwide acclaim in 2013, is a global survey of the cultural place of birds in human lives. This new presentation about the book explores how birds have given wing to our creative imaginations for thousands of years. Cocker discovers why birds have been such a major source of creativity. Environmentalism, Mark argues, undersells the significance of nature and overlooks how biological shrinkage impacts, not just upon wildlife diversity, but as major cultural deficit. The Wildtrack Bookshop will be there and some of Mark’s books available too.

Managing Landscape Change & Future Ecologies: Cultural Severance & Continuity

9th to 11th September 2015, Sheffield Showroom & Workstation, Sheffield, UK

Following the highly successful meeting in May 2014, Ian Rotherham and colleagues are organising a major, international, 3-day conference on the theme of ‘Wilder By Design’. The 2014 event raised fundamental issues including the following Themes & Issues:

- Understanding concepts of ‘wild’, ‘re-wilding’ and ‘wilderness’ in urban and rural settings, asindividuals and for different communities;

- The language used to discuss concepts and how they are represented and communicated to the widerworld;

-The political, economic and social contexts and drivers for change;

- The short and longer-term impacts of change;

-How underlying change affects ability to create, manage and sustain future landscapes.

- What wild and wilderness mean to individuals.

With a critical view of projects, issues and perspectives from across the world as well as the UK, we will be developing these ideas and paradigms. The conference will examine concepts of cultural severance and the eco-cultural nature of landscapes as well as addressing critical issues around (re) wilding in both rural and urban situations. The paradigms of wilder landscapes and the interactions between nature and culture, between history and ecology, and between climate, people and nature, will make for a continuing and rich discussion.

The first day, (9th Sept.), starts mid-morning with presentations through the day and a guest lecture in the evening. The following two days will mix plenary and parallel sessions with a dedicated poster presentation session on the Thursday afternoon (10th Sept). A conference dinner will be held on the Thursday evening.

Speakers include Rob Lambert, Frans Vera, George Peterken, Mauro Agnoletti, Adrian Newton, Alastair Driver, Peter Bridgewater, Ted Green, Keith Alexander, Jill Butler, Della Hooke, Ian Rotherham, Peter Taylor, Rob Lambert, Steve Carver, Sue Everett, Chris Spray, Jim McAdam, Tomasz Samojlik, Kenneth Olwig, Tom Williamson, Kieran Sheehan, and many others. Chris and Anne-Marie Smout will be attending as guests of honour. Public keynote lecture on Wednesday evening by Mark Cocker. Conference proceedings on cd-rom: available at the event; and a major book(s) will be published post-conference.

Thornbridge Helsinki
Thornbridge Bar To Be Opened In Helsinki
Date: 18th August 2015
Location: Helsinki

Thornbridge Brewery is starting its search to find a site to open a bar in Helsinki, Finland’s capital city. Working with their Finnish importer Brew Seeker Oy and its mother company Captol Invest Oy the search is underway to find a suitable site in central Helsinki with the target of opening by the end of 2015.

“This is an exciting project working together with one of the most innovative and exciting breweries in the world,” says Teemu Lehto, CEO of Captol Invest-group. “We believe the Finnish beer audience will be thrilled about having a totally new concept in Helsinki which will surely also support the role of Finland and Helsinki as being among the front runners in the development of great craft beer offering”.

“We have been delighted at the great reception our beers have had in Finland,” says Thornbridge MD Jim Harrison, “and we have really enjoyed working alongside our partners there to provide a wide range of our beers in top quality condition. The prospect of a bar in Helsinki and working with Mikki and the team to make this a great Thornbridge experience is something that we are really looking forward to.”

Entrepreneur Mikki Nyman has been appointed as operational restaurateur for the project. Mikki will run the bar with Captol Invest’s support in line with their new MYBAR concept.

“The new pub will have a great selection of beers, including special brews from Thornbridge on a regular basis,” says entrepreneur Mikki Nyman. “Our intention is to have a modern approach to the classical British pub in our interior design and offering. Thornbridge’s well known slogan; “Innovation, passion, knowledge” will describe perfectly our aim with the pub.”

Great Taste Awards 2015 - Jaipur and Halcyon voted in the top 50 UK Food and Drink

Taste Awards
Great Taste Awards 2015 - Jaipur and Halcyon voted in the top 50 UK Food and Drink
Date: 10th August 2015

We are very excited to have received 5 awards for our beers at the Great Taste Awards 2015! The awards are held annually and known as ‘the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink’ with the judging administered by a panel of over 400, including well-known and very well respected specialists.

Only around 1 percent of entrants receive a prestigious ‘3 stars’ at the awards and both Jaipur, for the second year running, and Halcyon, a new entry, were awarded this accolade. Alongside this we picked up ‘1 star’ for Wild Raven, Otto and Saint Petersburg rounding out an overall great result for us from the awards this year.

All of the winners then proceeded to the next stage where the ‘Top 50 Winners’ were selected, both Jaipur and Halcyon made the cut and were named as two of the fifty best food and drink products in the UK!

We are very proud that our beers have been recognised at the Great Taste Awards and this brings us up to 20 awards since we started entering in 2011. Having our beers acknowledged in this way by a range of experts from across the food and drinks industry helps to show the wide appeal of our beers.

International Thornbridge Bar To Open

Netherlands
International Thornbridge Bar To Open
Date: 6th August 2015
Location: Netherlands

Thornbridge beers are gaining popularity worldwide with exports growing in over 30 countries during the past 5 years. And as the number of their international beer fans grow "Partnerships with importers and those managing bars that stock Thornbridge are crucial to ensure our beers reach the drinker in the best of condition" says Simon Webster, Chief Operating Officer from Thornbridge.

Paul Leeyen has been stocking Thornbridge beers for 3 years at his bar in Den Bosch in the Netherlands and has been delighted with the response from his customers "High quality and a great variety of beer styles sets Thornbridge amongst the top breweries we deal with. Working with them and their importer, Bier&cO, has been a really positive experience".

Paul has been so delighted with his Thornbridge partnership that he approached the brewery about the idea of opening a Thornbridge Bar in Den Bosch. "After visiting the brewery in late 2014 I was blown away by the passion for their beers that everyone at Thornbridge demonstrated. I knew that if I could find the correct site in sHertogenbosch  then a Thornbridge bar would be a great success". After months of looking for the right site Paul has now found one and has been busy working with Thornbridge and Bier&cO with an aim of opening the Thornbridge at sHertogenbosch on the 4th September.

Webster is excited by the concept "It really continues what we have been doing in the UK and on export - find and work with people who are as passionate about beer as we are and have skills that complement what we wish to do with Thornbridge beers. In Bier&cO we have an experienced importer and likewise with Paul. When we visited his current bar in sHertogenbosch, we knew our beers were in safe hands. So when he approached us to develop the Thornbridge Bar it excited us and it has been a lot of fun planning what we are sure will be a great success".

The Half Pint Marathon raises nearly £8,000 for charity

The Half Pint Marathon raises nearly £8,000 for charity
Date: 3rd August 2015
Location: Sheffield Venues

The collaboration between Thornbridge Brewery and True North Brew Co that had Sheffielders raising their half pint glasses for charity.

The ‘Half Pint Marathon’ that took place across Sheffield during May was a resounding success, raising nearly £8,000 for the four local charities it supported - St Luke’s, Roundabout, The Children’s Hospital and Bluebell Wood.

Throughout May participants were encouraged to visit 13 independent pubs across Sheffield. Each of the venues served up a specially created collaboration Thornbridge and True North beer, called ‘Stitch’ - a light, hoppy, 4% session ale! Every pint of the specially created ‘Stitch’ helped raise money for the charities, as did every barrel of the beer bought by the pub.

The 13 venues that took part in the Half Pint marathon were;

  • The Greystones,
  • The Bath Hotel,
  • The Hallamshire House,
  • The Stags Head,
  • The Forum,
  • The Old House,
  • The York
  • The Broadfield,
  • The Shakespeare,
  • The Brothers Arms,
  • The University Arms,
  • Kelham Island
  • The Rutland

True North Brew Co. Managing Director, Kane Yeardley says “We’re astounded at the support that we got from the people of Sheffield. Raising £8,000 for the charities is incredible. It’s clear that people loved being able to explore the city, support their local independent venues and do something good for charity – all with a half pint glass in their hands!”

Alex Buchanan, Marketing and Export Manager at Thornbridge added “The success of the ‘Half Pint Marathon’ across Sheffield really has been incredible. It’s sown the seeds for this to become an annual event that can only help more charities in the future”

Tramlines Festival reveals 2015s Folk Forest stage lineup

Folk Forest
Tramlines Festival reveals 2015s Folk Forest stage lineup
Date: 30th June 2015
Location: Endcliffe Park, Sheffield

Tramlines Festival – one of the UKs biggest inner city festivals - has announced the lineup for its scenic Folk Forest. The latest additions include Chicagoan Ezra Furman, Seb Rochfords Mercury-nominated experimental jazz band Polar Bear and alt-folk outfit This Is The Kit, amongst others.

Nestled between a river and woodland location in the beautiful Endcliffe Park, Tramlines Folk Forest offers an alternative atmosphere to the rest of the festival site. For the first year, the Folk Forest has become one of the festivals wristband venues, meaning fans can enjoy an expanded lineup and bigger stage.

Other newly announced acts to play the Folk Forest over the weekend of 24 – 26 July are Ivor Novello award-winner Scott Matthews, Sheffield Americana four-piece The Payroll Union, indie-pop duo Meadowlark and new local folk-rock band Eastern Seaboard Radio Station. The new additions join the likes of GoGo Penguin, Diagrams, Hidden Orchestra and FURS to complete the stage bill.

Festival Director Sarah Nulty said: “After the success of bringing the Cathedral stage into the wristband scheme last year, the Folk Forest stage will also become part of the paid festival. As well as allowing us to ensure that the profile of artists and quality of production can be raised, the move will also support the long-term sustainability of an integral part of Tramlines.”

Folk Forest Manager Gareth Roberts said: “The Tramlines wristband-only Forest Stage will return to the much loved ‘forest glade’ corner of Endcliffe Park, featuring top quality music, food and drink. We’ve substantially increased the artist budget and have plans to improve the look and feel of the stage area with themed décor and lights, a second bar and a new footbridge over the Porter. It’s all very exciting!”

The free-entry Forest Fair will also return to the main field in Endcliffe Park, featuring an extended arts and crafts market, forest school, heritage crafts area and the all new music marquee alongside Endcliffe Park family favourites including the café, fairground and playground.

Weekend tickets can be purchased from www.tramlines.org.uk for only £30 + bf, which makes Tramlines one of the best value festivals around.

I Love You Will You Marry Me - Strawberry Blonde Ale

I Love You Will You Marry Me - Strawberry Blonde Ale
Date: 16th June 2015
Location: Sheffield Pubs

Last weekend we released our brand new beer ‘I Love You Will U Marry Me’, a Strawberry Blonde Ale. The name comes from Park Hill Flats where this wording was painted onto one of the bridges facing Sheffield city centre as a marriage proposal and we decided this bridge, of course, would be the perfect place to taste it first!

We launched this beer on Saturday across all of our pubs in Sheffield, where complimentary strawberries were given out to accompany the beer, and Peddlers Market at Park Hill Flats in Sheffield. The reception was great and we believe this is going to be the perfect summer beer!

The first batch is on keg and you will be able to find it in all the usual bars that take our keg beers, we will then be looking to bottle this very soon too, so keep an eye out!

The Riverside Business Park is the biggest mixed-use employment site in the Peak District and these plans are vital to maintaining the prosperity of the area’s economy and commercial activity in Bakewell. Thornbridge are growing both our business and reputation. The opportunity to expand our operations at Riverside will ensure we continue to grow, create jobs and attract visitors from around the world to Bakewell.

The proposed developments will enhance the Bakewell conservation area and improve access to this key employment area further helping local businesses and improving opportunities for local residents and the community we work in.

These proposals reflect a defining moment for the local economy and other major employers in our region. The improvement and developments proposed will lead to more jobs, more visitors and maintain Bakewell’s position as the Peak District’s ‘capital’. Together with Riverside Business Park, Pinelog and other businesses we work alongside, these proposals will create and safeguard up to 600 jobs – a significant number for a town the size of ours.

The site has been the home to successful enterprises for more than 200 years and we are proud to be a part of this tradition. The carefully designed development showcases the Peak District’s world-class environment and commitment to growing the local economy.

Thornbridge have been in Bakewell for ten years and in that time we’ve seen our business grow by 400 per cent.

The proposals, including the new bridge, gives us great hope of further expansion. Without that it will be difficult for us to continue to create and protect local jobs.

We want the local community, and our customers around the UK and the world, to understand our point of view, and why we have put our support behind the business park’s proposals.

10 Years of Jaipur!

Jaipur Day
10 Years of Jaipur!
Date: 7th June 2015

Today is the 10th anniversary of our flagship beer, Jaipur IPA!

10 years ago today Stefano Cossi & Martin Dickie (pictured) brewed our famous Jaipur IPA in a small brewery based in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall and since then the we’ve never looked back!

Jaipur was an unusual style of beer to brew in the UK and was to some extent a standalone beer here. After the beers creation on 7:6:2005, Jaipur was to be put on the map by winning Beer of the Festival at Sheffield CAMRA 2005.

In the 10 years that have passed we now export to 35 countries &  the majority of Thornbridge production has moved to the much larger Riverside site in Bakewell but Jaipur is still the beer we can’t produce fast enough!

So we raise a glass today to Jaipur IPA and cheers to the next 10 years!

Introducing Brouwerij t IJ, American Wheat Ale

Introducing Brouwerij t IJ, American Wheat Ale
Date: 12th May 2015

We have brewed a collaboration beer with Dutch brewery, Brouwerij t IJ . One of our Brewers, Ben went over to create an American Wheat beer with their head brewer, Roel and after much consideration they devised a recipe for a light refreshing beer for the summer.

American Wheat uses the highly potent Galaxy and Mosaic hops so this beer packs a delicious citrus punch. With plenty of hop aroma and a smooth finish, this should be a great beer for summer days relaxing in the beer garden.

Hailing from Amsterdam, Bouwerij’t IJ have a very recognisable querky brand and have had success with beers such as Zatte and Columbus.

New beer takes walk on Wild Side

wild side
New beer takes walk on Wild Side
Date: 10th March 2015
Location: Peak District

A new beer will celebrate 10 years of open access in the Peak District National Park and encourage visitors to walk on the Wild Side.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act saw the public’s right of access grow from 240 sq km to more than 500 sq km, opening up a new world to be explored inside Britain’s first national park.

The freedom to roam brought large parts of the Peak District’s wilder landscape within reach of walkers, climbers, runners and wildlife enthusiasts, allowing visitors to wander at will without keeping to public paths.

To mark the anniversary, Bakewell-based Thornbridge Brewery, which also celebrates its 10th birthday this year, has created a new pale ale, called Wild Side.

It will be officially launched with tours of the Riverside Brewery on March 20. Ian Rotherham, professor of environmental geography at Sheffield Hallam University, will talk about the wilder side of nature in our wilder areas and guests will be able to sample the new brew. A minimum donation of £10 is requested and all proceeds from the tour will go into the Access Fund to further improve access in the national park. Tours are at 3pm and 5pm and anyone interested should email access@peakdistrict.gov.uk.

Alex Buchanan, marketing manager at Thornbridge, said: “In 2005, when we started brewing in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall, little did we know that we would have grown to have a second brewery in Bakewell, have won over 350 awards, employ in excess of 40 staff  and export our beers to 33 countries!

“We now regularly get visitors from across the UK and the world and one of the delights is sharing with them the Peak District National Park and the great countryside that surrounds and inspires us.

“When we heard of the anniversary of open access we were keen to get involved and decided to brew a beer to celebrate.’’

Ian Rotherham said: “Access to the moors and bogs is all about nature on the wild side; the freedom of spirit and the freedom to roam.

“This is a precious heritage that has been hard won and should be savoured and celebrated. It must not be taken for granted but nurtured for future generations as a part of our birth-right.

Sue Smith, access and rights of way officer for the Peak District National Park Authority, said: Many people perhaps don’t realise that approximately a third of our national park is access land.  We hope that this anniversary beer will help inspire others to take a walk on the wild side on our hills, moors and dales. All proceeds from the brewery tours will go into the fund set up so that we can continue to improve access for the future for all to enjoy.’’

This is an entry level position but there is room for progression within the brewing team if the candidate shows potential and aptitude for the job. This role would also suit someone interested in beginning a career in brewing and in this instance a scientific background would be beneficial but this is certainly not a requirement, as training will be provided on the job.

Onto 2015 and our Tenth Anniversary
Date: 30th December 2014

As 2015 approaches anticipation is building here for a year of celebration as we look forward to commemorating 10 years of brewing with an expansion in our capacity and new staff to help with it all.

It all seems a long way from 2005 when we began brewing on our second-hand kit at Thornbridge Hall. No-one had heard of us and convincing pubs to take our beers was a challenge (until they tried them….) Since the beginning we’ve had a succession of great people working for us all with a focus on the “Innovation  Passion Knowledge” required to make great beer and delight customers and our success has undoubtedly come from that.

The brewery, with the addition of the Riverside site, has been transformed in ten years and the brewing scene in the UK has also changed dramatically and we like to feel we have played our part in that. We hope to have inspired some to join us and help spread the word for good beer amongst traditional beer drinkers and those discovering what a great diverse quality, fun drink beer can be.

Countless number of people have helped us over the past 10 years – far too many to mention but to all of those that have supported us we will be raising a glass to you in 2015.  We have a number of plans for new beers (look out for Jaipur X), some old favourites returning and events including our Great Peak Weekender (July 3-5th) to mark our 10 years.  We will keep you posted on all of these - so here’s looking to many more years of Never Ordinary beers. A happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year from all the team at Thornbridge.

We thought it was a great idea and created a beer specifically for the event, we have already been so excited about the return in 2015 we just brewed a fresh batch

The beer is a Handsome Pale Ale and provides a great showcase for a blend of classic English hops including Challenger, Fuggles and Bramling Cross that give the beer a crisp and refreshing taste – what could be better after a long bike ride.

We have just started sending our beers over to New Zealand with Beertique.

It got started with a bang yesterday as our old Head Brewer Kelly Ryan hosted a tasting event for our beers at Fork and Brewer - it was well attended and we had a cracking line up of beers available including Charlie Brown, AM:PM and Double Scotch!

It was a great reception and entry for our beers and we hope leads to continued popularity in NZ!

Inspired By The Peak District
Date: 11th November 2014
Location: Derbyshire

Here at Thornbridge we are always inspired by where we work, having our brewery located in the beautiful Peak District means it is always a pleasure making the journey in and we always love just relaxing, taking in our surroundings and taking inspiration for our next ideas.

We know that we certainly aren’t the only ones who feel like this and in working on new designs we looked to local artist and designer Matthew J I Wood knowing that he would be able to create something that expressed our love of the Peaks. He certainly didnt let us down and has created some truly unique concepts, which we are showcasing on mugs, posters and bar runners.

Here is what Matthew had to say about them;

When I was asked to produce a set of illustrations for Thornbridge Brewery, I found inspiration in the surroundings of the Brewery itself. Having a National Park on your doorstep should be celebrated, and I think it forms a big part of what Thornbridge do.
Matthew

We were very pleased that Matthew was able to find the same spark from the area that we enjoy here and this certainly comes across in the artwork. These make for a cracking present or just a treat for yourself so make sure to order here -http://thornbridgebrewery.co.uk/shop.php

It was entered into the Stouts/Porters category and just beat out Murmansk (our Baltic Porter) to claim first place, it was then entered into the final category and was voted the Overall Festival Champion, a great achievement!

Trekdrop or ‘Liquorice Pull’ was on our minds yesterday as we created an Imperial Liquorice Stout with the good chaps from Van Moll in the Netherlands. Erwin (the owner) has been selling an awful lot of our beer over in Eindhoven and hopefully will be selling this beer as well!

Erwin brought lots of Trekdrop over with him to give it an authentic Dutch touch and we are very excited for the end result! The beer will be pretty rare as we are only doing a few kegs so if you see it, try it!!

Vienna IPA - Launch of the Great British Home Brew Winning Beer in Waitrose

Rob and Graham
Vienna IPA - Launch of the Great British Home Brew Winning Beer in Waitrose
Date: 8th October 2014
Location: Waitrose Stores

Office worker, Graham Nelson, will today see the beer he originally crafted in his kitchen, go on sale in Waitrose. Graham, 39, who first tried making beer only a year ago, has won a competition which searched to find the best home brew.

The Great British Home Brew Challenge, organised by Derbyshires Thornbridge Brewery and Waitrose along with Brew UK, launched in June 2014. Its quest was to find the best pint made by the growing number of home brewers making beer in their kitchens, garages and sheds around the nation.

After receiving over 200 entries, a panel of top drinks experts gathered in August to judge the wide range of beers received, naming Grahams Vienna IPA their top tipple.

Since winning the competition, Nelson, a father from Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, has worked with Thornbridge to brew and bottle his recipe, ready for launch.

Graham says “Since learning that Id won its been a fantastic experience to be involved in helping Thornbridges brewers scale-up my recipe and make the beer. I only make forty bottles when home brewing so to see ten thousand bottles packaged and ready to be sent out was quite humbling!"

Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer at Thornbridge said, “I knew Grahams beer was going to be in the running for best homebrew the moment I tasted it. It was solid, well-balanced, clean and had a modern hop profile which really stood out. We have closely followed Grahams recipe to keep true to the batch he first made at home.”

Waitrose has seen a rise in demand for real ales and craft beers with sales up 10%. Waitrose Beer Buyer, Kate Prall said, "We think Grahams beer will be a hit with ale fans. Its crisp, well-rounded flavour will be the perfect accompaniment to a warming curry this autumn."

The Home Brew Challenge Vienna IPA will be available in 70 Waitrose shops nationwide, including in Grahams home county of Cheshire, for £2.50, 500ml.

The event went off on Monday October 6th and we were greeted by a sell-out crowd to try a sampling of 6 of our beers, the event was well organised and the crowd were very receptive, the cracking food (Beadeca’s Well braised Ox cheek and Peanut Butter Treacle Tart) went down a storm matching well with the beers we drank alongside.

We took Jaipur and Chiron down and were very pleased to find a great amount of fans for two of our stalwart beers!

Tuesday night came and the bar was packed out – we got to meet lots of old friends and make some new ones, try some beers and, in all, have a cracking time!

Charity Guided Art Crawl Gets Its Own Thornbridge Ale

Charity Guided Art Crawl Gets Its Own Thornbridge Ale
Date: 31st August 2014
Location: Sheffield Venues

Sheffield’s unique multi-venue art exhibition ‘Pub Scrawl’ has teamed up with Thornbridge to produce its own ale ahead of the event on Sunday August 31st.

Scrawl is well balanced with aromas of tropical fruit such as pineapple and passion fruit and can be bought from our online shop here http://thornbridgebrewery.co.uk/product.php?s=scrawl

Simon Webster, Thornbridge Director says “After the fantastic success of the first Pub Scrawl we were delighted to get involved with this year’s event and to design a new bottled beer to celebrate its return. A bottled beer also means that more people can enjoy this beyond those that get along on the evening. Our brewers always have lots of ideas for new beers and for Scrawl they have chosen one that is packed full of tropical fruit flavours that the hop combination imparts. At 4.5% the beer is ideal for those wanting a sessional, refreshing well balanced beer”.

Curated by A Month of Sundays Gallery, the home of Sheffield artist Pete McKee, the exhibition features new works from 10 artists who will each become ‘artist in residence’ at one of 10 hand-picked venues.

Artists and Venues are as follows:

Pete McKee – Fagans

India Hobson – DaDa

Human Studio - Bungalows and Bears

65daysofstatic - Great Gatsby

Nick Deakin & Tom J Newell – Forum

In the Nursery & Anthony Bennett - Green Room

Studio Binky – Washington

Jo Peel – Bowery

James Green - Bath Hotel

Jonathan Wilkinson - The Harley

Chris Smith of A Month of Sundays Gallery said: ‘The response to Pub Scrawl 2014 has been amazing – the guided tours have sold out already, but as entry to all venues is free, we are encouraging people to buy a programme and take their own tour at their own pace.

‘There’s also a DIY Pub Scrawl competition to win 2 pairs of guided tour tickets – just pick up a special beer matt at one of the venues and send us your own artwork!’

Proceeds from the sale of all programmes will go to the Sheffield Childrens’ Hospital Charity.

Art and ale lovers alike are encouraged to check www.pubscrawl.co.uk for more details about the event including exclusive interviews with the contributors and to use the #pubscrawl to get involved.

The Great British Home Brew Challenge 2014

HomeBrew News
The Great British Home Brew Challenge 2014
Date: 1st June 2014

Waitrose is teaming up with craft brewery Thornbridge and Brew UK to find this country’s best home brew.

The Home Brew Challenge 2014 launches on 1st June 2014 and will see the winning beer appear on Waitrose shelves across the UK.

Recognising the great British tradition of home brewing, the competition encourages budding home brewers to enter for the chance to see their own recipe transformed by Thornbridge into a commercial craft beer.

Waitrose Beer Buyer, Kate Prall, says, ‘This is a hugely exciting project for us, and it comes at a very important time in the history of craft breweries. The resurgence in popularity of both craft breweries and people trying out their own homemade beers means that we’re bound to get some amazing entries to our competition, which we’re looking forward to tasting.’

With over 1000 craft breweries now operating in the UK, the range of beers styles available has never been greater.

Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer at Thornbridge, explains: ‘A considerable number of home brewers develop great quality beers that can never be appreciated by a larger drinking public. The Home Brew Challenge 2014 will provide home brewers with an opportunity to match their beers against those of other enthusiasts, and have them tasted by a panel of expert beer judges. The Home Brew Challenge 2014 will be a celebration of the British tradition of

brewing with the aim of creating a great new beer and for people to try and embrace many of the new flavours in beers from across the world.’

The winning beer will be chosen by an expert panel and will be available in  Waitrose shops from October 2014.

See www.gbhomebrew.co.uk for entry details.

BBC Food & Farming Award

BBC Award News
BBC Food & Farming Award
Date: 7th May 2014

After sifting through 100s of entries the judging panel for the Best Drink Producer, led by Victoria Moore and Pete Brown, has awarded the accolade for 2014 to Thornbridge Brewery.

The BBC award is made to the company that uses “carefully sourced ingredients and skill to produce an outstanding drink”.

Pete Brown commenting on the judging at Thornbridge said “Every time I go there, there are new surprises, and they had plenty more this time. Thornbridge are exploring the vast library of beer styles that already exist around the world, mastering them in turn. Having made their name with cask ale and then American style craft beers, they’re now exploring classic German styles such as Kolsch and Weizen”

With the number of entries in the category doubling in 2014 Victoria Moore said the task was “Incredibly tough” but that Thornbridge was “the one we were talking about weeks after the visit”.

“Absolutely delighted” said Jim Harrison about winning the Award “whilst we have won many awards in the brewing industry to win one across a wider range of drinks, given the tough competition, is indeed an honour and a reflection on the quality we aim to achieve at Thornbridge”.

Thornbridge’s Head Brewer Rob Lovatt was also delighted “I’ve just returned from the World Beer Cup with a medal for our beer and so to win this award so soon after is a real testament to the hard work all my team put in day in and day out”

This amount of time and the distinctive Noble hops we use help to create a beer which is clean, delicate, soft and extremely moreish.

Some Beer Thoughts

Waving goodbye to our latest tanker heading to the the USA laden with Jaipur, Halcyon and Medici (our new India Brown Ale), I started thinking about how the American Craft Breweries have influenced the British brewing scene over the last 10 years or so. During my formative years at Meantime Brewery I visited the US numerous times and was blown away by the craft beer scene there. However, some of my favourite beers have come from closer to home and from some of the most distinguished breweries of Europe.
Over the last 6 months... Read More on our Brewers' Blog

Our brand new India Brown Ale ‘Medici’ has gone out to a few bars in the UK this week!

It’s an amalgamation of an India Pale Ale and an American Brown Ale, nutty, toffee malt flavours and a caramel sweetness are balanced by a robust bitterness provided by Australian Galaxy and British Challenger hops. These provide a spicy, cedar aroma with a gentle citrus note, it has a finish of raisins, hints of liquorice and a dry herbal woody bitterness.

It’s pretty rare so make sure to try it if you see it!

We have been working hard with the legends of the US Brewing Scene, Sierra Nevada, to create a brand new batch of Twin Peaks!

This Anglo American collaboration combines the best of American hops and British malt with some added knowledge from both sides of the pond to create a fantastic Pale Ale. It’s 5% with aromas of tropical fruits - pineapple and mango balanced with the refreshing taste of lemon sherbet, refreshing and easy drinking.

It’s being kegged Monday April 7th so keep an eye out for it – another batch in bottles will follow soon as well!!

We are delighted to be a founding partner of L’Eroica the famous historic Tuscan bike tour known as 'the most handsome bike race in the World’ when the event comes to Bakewell and the Peak District National Park in June 2014.

Hosted over three days L'Eroica Britannia has been confirmed as a fun festival including a three-route bike tour of the Peak District on the 22 June 2014.

The 3-day event will bring the World's focus to the area and will be a must event for cycling enthusiasts and anyone who loves great beer and food. Thornbridge will be playing a full part in the event as a founding partner with beer and food bars at the festival and along the route. 2014 also coincides with the brewery’s 10thanniversary and a special beer festival, featuring some of the world’s great brewers, will be held as part of L’Eroica at a specially constructed site at Thornbridge Hall.

A Message from Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer

Robs Blog
A Message from Rob Lovatt, Head Brewer
Date: 21st March 2014

This year appears to be flying by – already 3 months since I last updated this blog.  Myself and the team have been really busy and worked really hard to get three more of our existing beers into bottle and also squeezed in the brewing and bottling of a brand new beer very close to mine and also my brew team’s hearts!

I heard a great quote recently that said “tradition is about handing on the flame not looking back into the ashes” - I like to think this reflects the way we make beer here at Thornbridge. A good example of this is with our Double Scotch  -yes a traditional beer style  - Scotch Ale - but one that can be produced today in an exciting way that reflects the past but isn’t hindered by it. So with the Thornbridge take on this I have produced a beer that is a true expression of maltiness, full bodied, with a smooth alcoholic warmth and a deliciously moreish residual caramel sweetness.  Hops need to play  a balancing act rather than being at the forefront, and so this is what I aimed for.  To add complexity, I chose to have a percentage of the beer barrel aged in Auchentoshan whisky barrels.  But the key for me was to get just the right level of whisky and wood character expressed in harmony  –  this is a beer after all not a spirit and the complex balance of aromas  and tastes, whilst a challenge, I like to think has been achieved  in a perfect blend. I hope you enjoy it as much as the team and I  had fun brewing it.

To start with Colorado Red , a beer we first brewed with Doug Odell from Odell Brewing Company, is back by popular demand and for the first time in bottle.  A Red ale at 5.9% abv and just the right amount of bitterness to balance the malt sweetness.  The reason we think this beer works so well is the complex blend of juicy British malts with a combination of several English hop varieties. I defy anyone to tell me that British hops are not as good as American hops when used in the correct way.  I feel that this is the definitive English Hopped Red ale produced in this country.

We also felt Sequoia, our American Amber would work really well in bottle format and we managed to squeeze it into the bottling schedule.  This beer uses hops from Australia, England and America to get the right hop flavours of citrus and pine and tastes really fresh and lively with the additional level of carbonation.

Our third new bottled beer is Beadeca’s Well (the orginal name for Bakewell), a recipe one of our young brewers, Ben Wood developed with a guiding hand!  This beer is a satisfying blend of roasted malts like Chocolate and Brown, with just the right hint of smoke from Bamberg Beechwood smoked malt.  The flavour intensity of smoked malt is highly variable and experience of use is required to get the right level of smokiness; we feel in Beadecas Well we have this just right.

Last year at the Hall Brewery we decided to brew a Weizenbock as part of our European series.  My team and I absolutely loved it and we decided to brew an entire batch for bottle at the Riverside brewery.  Classic in formulation and using a Bavarian strain of yeast, we employed all of the secrets of the Bavarians to maximise the flavour compounds which epitomise this very special style.  It’s a real celebratory beer and also best drunk as fresh as possible. The beer named Otto is now available in bottle and from the 24th to the 30th March 2014, you can get £5 OFF – let us know what you think.

I’d also like to let you know we have another batch of Bayern, our German Pilsener currently at 4°C where it’ll stay for the next few weeks.  We were delighted with the reception of this beer and have decided to also get this beer into bottle as soon as it has finished maturation.

We look forward to letting you know more about our future brews including a very special collaboration with our friend Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery which is currently only known as ‘Operation Serpent’. All I can tell you at this point is I have a 150 ex-Bourbon casks currently swelling in our new purpose built barrel store. ..

I’m off to judge at the Beer World Cup in Colorado a couple of weeks, we’re hoping for a couple of medals and to get some inspiration from our friends in the States.

Cheers

Rob

Thornbridge - Top of the World

World Beer Awards News
Thornbridge - Top of the World
Date: 1st October 2013

We are celebrating here at Thornbridge today after winning two awards in the prestigious World Beer Awards 2013. After four rounds of judging in blind tastings of nearly 600 beers from more than 30 countries our Wild Raven was voted, for the second year running, the World’s Best Black IPA  and  Tzara the Best Kolsch Beer in Europe.

“Absolutely delighted” said  Rob our head brewer about the awards “for Wild Raven to win two years running is a great tribute but we are also really proud that a British brewery has shown that it can make a great Kolsch -  a style of beer that is often viewed as something only made well in mainland Europe.”
